May 2008 ; It's time to go "Green"! After more than 20 years of shooting Air Force gray, the time has come to widen my horizons. The huge Army Post at Fort Drum, N.Y., is home to the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade supporting the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and Detachment 2/174th FW from the New York ANG. 10th Mountain is at the forefront of the Global War on Terror! Its people and equipment deserve praise and recognition. So to that end we will attend the Centennial celebrations on June 28 and 29, featuring an Air Show and Open House and we are looking forward to this event. Photos and report will appear in July followed by a larger coverage of the 10th Aviation Brigade later in the year. Click here for more infos about Fort Drum.
April 2008 ; On April 1, the Flying Yankees from the Connecticut ANG joined Air Mobility Command when the 103rd was officially redesignated the 103rd Airlift Wing. Two pages of photos from the 2008 Heritage Flight Conference held at D-M are now posted on the site, Warbirds and modern jets. Air National Guard and Reserve aircraft in storage at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance And Regeneration Group facility in Davis-Monthan AFB are featured on this page.
On March 25, the 158th Fighter Wing of the Vermont Air National Guard set a new record when one of its F-16 achieved 7,000 hours of flying time. Click on the link to watch the video. And see the aircraft during a mission over Irak in 2007.
On April 6, the 102nd Fighter Wing was assigned a new mission and redesignated as the 102nd Intelligence Wing during a formal ceremony at Otis ANGB, Mass.
March 2008 ; On March 5, the 158th Fighter Wing from the Vermont Air National guard received its first F-16C Block 30 to replace its tired Block 25 which will be retired to AMARG soon. In fact, the unit has already retired one aircraft, 84-1212 to AMARG on September 26, 2007. Earlier this month, I did spend one week in Tucson, AZ, to attend the 2008 Heritage Flight Conference held in Davis-Monthan AFB and visit the 309th Aerospace Maintenance And Regeneration Group, previously called AMARC. More photos to come soon!
February 2008 ; After 35 years of around-the-clock vigilance over the Northeast United States, the 102nd Fighter Wing from the Massachusetts Air National Guard flew its last mission over Cape Cod on January 24, 2008. In the next few weeks, the unit will transfer its remaining F-15s to the 131st FS in Westfield and the others will be retired to AMARG for storage. After 87 years of flying, the 102nd will become the 102nd Intelligence Wing.
January 2008 ; On December 28, 2007, the 103rd Fighter Wing of the Connecticut Air National Guard performed its final flight with its two last remaining A-10s. This day marked the end of an era for the A-10 community in New England with both the 103rd and 104th Fighter Wings loosing their A-10s within the same year. The HOG will be missed in the skies of New England!
December 2007 ; Best wishes to everyone and special thanks to the folks from the 157th Air Refueling Wing from the New Hampshire ANG. I had the opportunity to fly a refueling mission to support the 174th Fighter Wing this last November and no less than 8 F-16s came to receive fuel from the tanker. Shooting conditions were a little tough but I managed to catch some formation as you can see from the photos on this page. More photos from the flight are posted here! I have also updated the 174th Fighter Wing page and added two photo galleries. One gallery with KC-135s from the 157th ARW and another one with F-16s from the 174th FW.
November 2007 ; After all those years photographying planes of all kind, I thought it would be interesting to post photos in specific galleries beside the ones on the unit's pages. After all, I have seen a lot of planes since the early eighties when I began going to airshows. I have created a new section on the website which will show different photo galleries depicting aircraft from various units in the area. With those long Winter months ahead of us, I will have time to go through my collection of photos to bring you more galleries. For now, you can look at those depicting aircraft from the 102nd, 103rd and 104th Fighter Wing.
The aviation scene in New England is going through some changes with many Air National Guard units going through conversion to new airframes or upgraded aircraf. The VT ANG will transition to F-16C block-30 in the Spring of 2008 while the 103rd FW will say goodbye to its last A-10 in the Fall of 2008. The 174th Fighter Wing is scheduled to convert from the F-16C to the MQ-9 Reaper also in 2008. And the 104th Fighter Wing will begin flying its F-15s over the Northeast soon.
I look forward to witness and document those changes.
September 2007; I used to attend a lot more airshows until the mid-nineties when there was a lot more of them. Conditions were a lot different as well. The New Hampshire Air National Guard and the Wings of Hope joined together to host an airshow to benefit the N.H. Brain Injury Association and celebrate the 157th ARW's 60th anniversary. I had made plans to attend this airshow and it was a lof of fun. A story about the show and photos can be seen here. More interesting things are planned before the year is over, stay tuned.
